Walk for Choice

The Health and Human Services Department is telling the state of Indiana that its Medicaid plan, which bans funding to Planned Parenthood, is illegal and must be changed.

In a letter sent to Indiana’s Medicaid director, and obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday, Medicaid Administrator Donald M. Berwick says Indiana’s plan will improperly bar Medicaid beneficiaries from receiving services. Berwick writes that federal law requires Medicaid beneficiaries to be able to obtain services from any provider qualified to provide services.

The notification comes after Indiana passed a law banning federal funding to Planned Parenthood, and as other states consider similar bans. Indiana can change its plan to conform with federal law, or the state could face penalties.

OK, here’s an analogy: preventing poor people from using Medicaid to pay for health care and birth control at Planned Parenthood because PP also performs (not-taxpayer-funded) abortions would be like preventing people on food stamps from using them at Walmart because Walmart also sells guns.

TRUTH BOMB.

As Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels mulls a presidential run in 2012, he announced plans to sign a bill making Indiana the first state to pull federal funding from Planned Parenthood, a move that could boost his standing among social conservatives.

"I supported this bill from the outset, and the recent addition of language guarding against the spending of tax dollars to support abortions creates no reason to alter my position." Daniels said in a statement. "The principle involved commands the support of an overwhelming majority of Hoosiers."

The bill would cut $3 million in federal money the state currently allocates to the women’s health group. It also would ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy unless the woman’s life is significantly threatened, require women seeking abortions to be informed that life starts at conception, and require doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges in a nearby hospital.

All of my friends and allies in Indiana—my heart goes out to you. I am so, so sorry.

I just really am at a loss for words right now. If this doesn’t open the nation’s eyes to what’s happening to our reproductive rights, I don’t know what will. We can’t continue to let this happen.

There are, I think more than 900 bills that were filed during this legislative session and a lot of them are right at this sort of inflection point here of decision by their state legislatures. Unfortunately with a real sweep last November, these are much more extreme legislatures in terms of being against women’s health care access. We are working in several states to try to ensure that women don’t lose access to health care services but there are many bad bills pending and some have already been signed.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand this is why we’re walking for choice on May 21st. It’s about so much more than PP’s funding. We are being threatened from every angle. This just has to stop.

Nobody with half a conscience left could possibly support tax payer funding of Planned Parenthood (the name of which is such a ruse).

Death Benefits,…

Well now, I feel like a broken record.

A-hem.

Due to the Hyde Amendment, federal funding for abortions through Planned Parenthood is federally prohibited. Planned Parenthood does not simply run around the Country handing out free Abortions to every pregnant woman on the street.

Planned Parenthood also offers many counseling services which aid the woman in deciding whether or not Abortion is right for her. There are many women who thought of having an Abortion due to financial reasons, but upon arriving at a Planned Parenthood Health Center discovered many methods by which to afford her pregnancy and baby. Planned Parenthood avidly advocates W.I.C., adoptions, and when in the correct circumstances—yes, Abortion.

Furthermore, even if federal funding for Planned Parenthood ceased, taxpayers would still be funding Abortions. Abortions are only federally funded when in the case of rape, incest, or when the woman’s life is in danger—and her insurance will not cover the procedure. Thus, with or without Planned Parenthood, you would have hospitals and other Health Centers who perform abortions which would, in the specific cases I listed, be funded by the taxpayer’s dime.

In truth, the number of these actual cases are incredibly low. As a result, the individual taxpayer pays roughly less than $1 to “fund Abortions.” Now, let’s take a look at the numbers you decided to cite, shall we?

While true, the number of deaths in the Iraq war were fewer than the number of successful abortions, you’ve obviously got your panties in a bunch regarding the taxpayer funding here. And, according to Congressional Budget Office report released in 2007, the Iraq war could cost taxpayers roughly $2.4 Trillion by 2017.

If you would seek to de-fund Planned Parenthood on the simple basis that it performs Abortions—not that it is federally funded to perform abortions—and would seek to rid many women and men of various other methods of affordable birth control, reproductive health care and general health care, it would lead me to believe you are an incredibly naive and blinded individual—despite your “research.”

IT IS NOT OVER. THIS IS NOT VICTORY.

Boehner and the GOP will continue their attack on Planned Parenthood. They will continue to add it into bills and hope, eventually, people will tire of hearing about it, and stop calling. They are hoping they will pass a ban on funding quietly, because we have moved on to the next offensive thing they are doing publicly.

KEEP CALLING.

KEEP DONATING.

KEEP MARCHING.

THIS WILL NOT EVER BE OVER.

DEFEND THE UTERI. TRUST INDIVIDUALS WITH THEIR OWN BODIES.

FOREVER.

I will keep paying attention.  I am going to stay vigilant.  Stay tuned…

The PP rider was removed because the Senate agreed to hold a vote on the measure separately. We are NOT out of the woods yet. Rest assured that as long as the Tea Party/GOP hold the majority in the House, this issue will continue to pop up and we’re going to have to continue to stay alert, inform, and fight.

And please please please PAY ATTENTION to your state legislatures. They’re attacking reproductive rights however they can.

Just so that you’re all aware….

I’ve confirmed with several organizers—both from February and March—that Planned Parenthood is actively discouraging its employees and volunteers from attending Walk for Choice.

I’m sure there are many reasons why (the egos of their action coordinators being one), but across the country they were put off because, yes, we use the word abortion.

What you do with this information is, hah, your choice, but I just thought you all should know.

Do you guys want to hear a funny story about how if they de-fund planned parenthood I won’t be able to afford birth control?

erinebola:

It’s really funny.

It goes like, I can’t afford 50 dollars a month on birth control, so I go to planned parenthood and pay closer to 20 dollars for 3 months worth, and don’t have children.

They also take care of most of my general healthcare needs because going to the doctor without health insurance is really expensive.

They base all their bills on my income so that I am able to afford everything.

Oh, yeah, they also make sure I do not have lady cancer and do pap smears for me, and assure me that I do not have breast cancer, which runs in my family.

So yeah, it’s a hilarious story about how the defunding of planned parenthood would pretty much ruin my life.

And my planned parenthood doesn’t even do any abortion related things.

Funny.

I don’t go to Planned Parenthood. As a PWD, I receive Medicaid, so I have a lot of physician options—and I’m also the GOP’s wet dream! An unemployed, sexually active woman with an invisible disability! Man, I’m just rolling in your tax dollars with my $700 a month.

But anyway, you know what’s funny? I’ve been taking birth control since I was 14 for a medical condition. I’ve been lucky enough to afford it the entire time. Others aren’t so privileged.

Let’s be crystal clear here: the anti-choicers do not care about women’s health. They are willfully ignorant of the ways birth control, emergency contraception, and abortions work. They do not want women to have access to accurate information about their bodies and their reproductive rights.

And they will not stop unless we get out there and tell them to STFU.

Whatever good, beneficial social services Planned Parenthood provides are more than cancelled out by the evil they perpetrate daily in abortions.

No. This is complete and utter nonsensical bullshit.

FIRST OF ALL, this particular bit of advertising pulls on a person’s heartstrings (like the millions of billboards across America) by showing you a fully-developed baby and drawing the conclusion of Planned Parenthood killing it. What Planned Parenthood does, and what all abortions do, is terminate the fetus. They are most certainly NOT taking a fully-developed child and killing it.

I feel like a broken record now, but less than 10%, closer to 3-5%, of what Planned Parenthood actually does is related to Abortions. Not to mention the fact that Planned Parenthood doesn’t just give away free abortions—people have to pay for them. And, generally, it is the person’s own private insurance (or the money directly out of their pocket) that funds their Abortion—unless it is in the case of rape, incest, or when the woman’s life is in danger and her own insurance will not cover it. Then, yes, “taxpayer money” does fund it, but considering the surprisingly small number of these cases that actually are federally funded, the individual taxpayer pays very little.

“Funding for Planned Parenthood” does not mean “Funding for Abortions.” The funds that go towards Planned Parenthood do not fund Abortions—in fact, there has been a Federal Prohibition on this since 1976 when the Hyde amendment was introduced, and passed, due to the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision.

This is what is known as fearmongering, and it really needs to stop. Here are some of the things that Planned Parenthood provides, that are not related to Abortions at all:

  • Various methods of affordable Birth Control.
  • Diabetes screenings.
  • Anemia testing.
  • Physical exams for both employment and sports.
  • Flu vaccines.
  • Thyroid screenings.
  • Colon Cancer screenings.
  • ED services.
  • Testicular Cancer screenings.
  • Prostate Cancer screenings.
  • Vasectomies.
  • HIV testing.
  • Gonorrhea testing.
  • A bazillion other STD tests that would look impressive, but would be ultimately repetitive.
  • Pelvic exams.
  • Pap smears.
  • Breast Cancer screenings.
  • Treatments that can prevent Cervical Cancer.

De-funding Planned Parenthood would not end Abortions—it would, however, successfully rid a significant percentage of our population of affordable reproductive, sexual and general healthcare. De-funding Planned Parenthood would not benefit the economy in any way, and the notion of such a tax-cut is sickening. De-funding Planned Parenthood would cause a loss of jobs, and a loss of means by which to afford birth control, which would then spike the rate of unintended pregnancies, which one could draw a fairly straight line to an increase in Abortions—of the back-alley, botched sort, and lead to the death of countless women.

De-funding Planned Parenthood will not end abortions. You should not punish such a wonderful institution based on some of the things it does that you disagree with, especially if “life” is your number-one priority.

Total smackdown.
